It’s the little things in life.

I’m Paul Thompson. My nickname is Tommo and everything is by me. Which is why my studio is imaginatively called ‘byTommo’.

I lean towards specialising in beverages because something about the packaging appeals to me, but I’m not married to it :)

I really enjoy making dark and moody hero shots. With shades and shadows stolen from Caravaggio, a can of beer can be made into a beautiful image. But when I start to animate, I get the urge to make things bounce, and have rhythm. Then comes a colourful pallet, and before I know it I’ve gone back into my world of whimsy. It’s a fun process, a fun result and one that I enjoy sharing with brands that look on the bright side. 

There’s nothing much about me personally because it’s not particularly riveting. I live in the countryside in Puglia, Italy, and spend my spare time trying in vain to get the perfect action photo of the dogs in full play mode. It’s my white whale.

Why ‘We’ crave whimsy

To me, whimsy is the human desire to play, to be spontaneous, and to delight in our imagination. In today’s world, which is becoming increasingly technologically saturated with dark clouds, whimsy can serve as an antidote to the stresses of the modern day.

I remember in lockdown how people did all kinds of silly things, including recreating the works of the Great Masters with kitchen utensils, and an ill-fitting wig. The world craved, created and reveled in whimsy.

Then everyone went back to work and the whimsy was turned off.  

But I think that we collectively crave it. The delight of parents playing a trick on their child and giggling uncontrollably together after the reveal, that’s whimsy. As is booking a last minute flight on the spur of the moment.

Let’s also not forget what to my mind is the Mother of whimsy; finding joy in the small delightful details as we walk down the path.

So I say ‘We Crave Whimsy’, and my mission is to put a little bit of whimsy back into the world…
